Rules of the Game

In the following section the rules are listed in German, followed by the English translation afterwards.

§1 - Vorbereitung

a) Zu Beginn erstellt jede/r Teilnehmer/in ein Ranking `R_own` der Nationalteams bezüglich der erwarteten Gewinnchancen beim FIFA World Cup 2018, indem er eine Reihenfolge der Nationen angibt. Das Ranking bleibt zunächst geheim, bis alle Rankings abgegeben wurden.
b) Anschließend werden die Rankings aller Teilnehmer/innen veröffentlicht und es wird das gemeinsame Ranking `R_common` durch Rangaddition gebildet. Wo mehrere Nationen dieselbe Position belegen würden, wird die alphabetische Reihenfolge der englischen Landesbezeichnung verwendet.
c) Jeder Nation wird ein Wert zugeordnet, der für die Dauer des Wettbewerbs unveränderlich ist. Das am stärksten platzierte Team bekommt den Wert 32, die nachfolgenden Teams bekommen absteigend die Werte 31, 30, usw.

§2 - Gewählte Nationen

a) Jede/r Teilnehmer/in wählt vor Beginn des Turniers 4 Nationen so, dass die Summe ihrer Werte kleiner gleich 60 ist.
b) In begründeten Ausnahmefällen darf sich der/die Teilnehmer/in beim Bilden der Summe durch Kopfrechnen um 1 verrechnen.

§3 - Der/Die Teilnehmer/in erzielt bei folgenden Ereignissen Gewinnpunkte:

a) Wann immer eine der aktuell gewählten Nationen unentschieden spielt, wird der Wert des Gegners gutgeschrieben.
b) Wann immer eine der aktuell gewählten Nationen gewinnt, wird der doppelte Wert des Gegners gutgeschrieben.

§4 - Auswechseln von Nationen

Nach Abschluss der Gruppenphase kann man seine Auswahl der 4 Nationen nach folgenden Bestimmungen ändern:

a) Für jede Nation wird die aktuelle Summe ihrer bisher eingespielten Anzahl Punkte `S` gemäß den Regeln in §3 gebildet (unabhängig davon, ob die Nation ausgewählt war oder nicht). Mit dieser Summe wird ein aktuelles Ranking `R_current` aller Nationen erstellt.
b) "Besserwisser-Regel": Eine Nation kann nur hinzugewählt werden, wenn sie zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt in `R_current` besser als in `R_common` und in `R_own` besser als in `R_common` gerankt ist. Also nur, wenn der/die Teilnehmer/in die Nation besser eingeschätzt hat als der Durchschnitt und es tatsächlich so eingetreten ist.
c) Der zu bezahlende Preis beträgt gleich der Summe der bisher erzielten Punkte `S` der Nation. Er wird dem/der Teilnehmer/in von den gesammelten Gewinnpunkten abgezogen. (Rechnung wird automatisch und nicht im Kopf durchgeführt!)
d) Wird eine Nation eingewechselt (zur Auswahl hinzugenommen), muss gleichzeitig im Austausch eine andere der gewählten Nationen ausgewechselt (von der Auswahl entfernt) werden, sodass jede/r Teilnehmer/in zu jeder Zeit 4 Nationen hat.
e) Das Auswechseln von Nationen ist nicht möglich, während ein Spiel läuft. Genauer, solange nicht, bis die Ergebnisse des Spiels im online Tipp-System eingetragen wurden (weil sich dadurch die Preise ändern können).

§5 - Sieger/in

a) Nach dem Wettbewerb ist der/diejenige Sieger/in, der/die die meisten Gewinnpunkte gesammelt hat.
b) Bei Gleichstand entscheidet der Geburtszeitpunkt der älteren Großmutter (früher gewinnt, im Zweifelsfall amtlichen Nachweis vorlegen).

An English translation is provided below. If there is a discrepancy between the two versions, the German version is the one that applies.

§1 - Preparation

a) Initially every participants defines a ranking, `R_own`, of the national teams depending on their expected chances at the FIFA World Cup 2018 by entering the order on the web page. This ranking is kept secret until all users' rankings are given.
b) Then all rankings become public and the common ranking, `R_common`, is compute by rank addition. If there would be multiple nations on the same rank, the alphabetic order of the names is used instead.
c) Every nations gets a value which will be constant for the whole contest. The national team on the first rank gets the value 32, the following teams get a by one decreasing value of 31, 30 etc.

§2 - Choosing nations

a) Every participant chooses 4 nations before the world cup starts. The sum of the values of these 4 nations has to be smaller or equal to 60 (except when applying the rule §2b)
b) If the participant fails to do the mental computation of 4 numbers and get a sum of 61 where the correct sum would be 60, this will be accepted, if the participants provides an excuse for their disability.

§3 - Computation of the score

a) If any of the choosen nations plays a match that results in a draw, the participants get the value of the opponent added to their score.
b) If any of the choosen nations wins match, the participants get twice the value of the opponent added to their score.

§4 - Trading nations

After completion of the group phase the selection of 4 nations can be changed by trading one nation for another:

a) For every nation the sum of its previously scored points, `S`, is computed by the rules in §3 (not taking into account if the nation was chosen or not). Using these sums a current ranking, `R_current`, of all nations is computed.
b) "Clever-Clogs-Rule": A nation can only be added, if a the time, it is ranked better in `R_current` than in `R_common` and also better in `R_own` than in `R_common`. That means that people who knew it advance that some teams would perform better than the average of participants did are now rewarded by having more opportunities to exchange teams.
c) The price of the nation that should be bought is equal to the sum of previously scored points, `S` of this nation. It will be substracted from the users' score.
d) If a nation is to be added at the same time one of the currently selected nations has to be dropped, such that every participant has exactly 4 nations at any time of the contest.
e) Selecting and dropping nations is not possible while a match is being played, you have to wait until the match is finished and the results are entered into the system.

§5 - Winner

a) After the contest the winner the participant with the highest score.
b) If there is a draw, date and time of birth of the oldest grandmother is the tie breaker, the participant with the older grandmother wins (in case of doubt an official document has to be provided).

Other Regulations

If there are vaguenesses about the rules or any other unforseen events a decision will either be discussed in the "Halb 4"-meetings of SGS & SSE or directly made by the organizer. The winner will get an invitation to the bike trip at 18th of July 2018 and will probably get a throphy and some congratulations there.

Every self-declared "Friend of Simulation" may participate in the game.

Privacy Policy

Our policy governs the collection of personal information through the friends-of-simulation.org website. This policy describes the types of information we may collect from visitors and how that information is used. Please read this policy carefully before providing us with any information. The policy was last updated at 27/05/2018 and this represents the current policy in effect and governing all personal information collected both before and after this date (see below section Changes to this Privacy Policy).

Information we collect

Participants interested in registering for the game must agree to our Rules of the Game before completing the registration. If you do not register, then the information we collect from you is limited. We log your IP address in order to help diagnose problems with our services and track usage statistics. Your IP address may vary each time you visit, or it may be the same. We may log other non-personal information such as the type of internet browser that you use or your connection speed. It would be extremely difficult for us to identify you through your IP address, browser type, or other non-personal information that we collect and we make no attempt to do so.

Unregistered users

We do NOT use Cookies nor 3rd party content such as web analytics. We may NOT place a small "cookie" file on your computer's hard drive. A cookie may contain information that allows us to track your path through our Website and to determine whether you have visited us before. You may elect not to accept cookies by changing settings in your browser; however, by not accepting cookies some or all of the functions of the Website may STILL work for you. Unless you register with us, the cookie contains no personally identifiable information (because if does not exist). We may NOT use cookies to help us understand how visitors use our Website and to help us to improve. We also DO NOT compile this information and DO NOT use it in the aggregate to determine common themes and trends among our visitors. From time to time our Website also may NOT run usability testing to help us improve the functions of our Website for all users. This may NOT include recording random tests that track users' actions and movements on specific pages of our Website. Our tests are contained to our Website and we do not track users' behavior on other websites.

Registered users

Registered Users are users that sign up at our Website. If you choose to register with us, in addition to information that we collect above we may collect information that you provide through any forms on the website, i.e. a user name, displayed name and email address, a personal ranking of the national football teams as well as the ability of mental arithmetic in the range of number up to 61, your habits of reading Terms & Conditions or not etc.

How we use the information we collect

We use personal information (the name) to provide you with a custom and personal experience at our Website (the welcome message). Registering also allows you to log in to our Website to take part in the betting game. We may use your personal email address to occasionally contact you with news or important information, to provide you with other information or invitations related to our Website, and to request your feedback. In addition to these periodic updates, we may NOT email you additional marketing materials that you have requested or that we believe would be of interest to you based upon information you've provided. These marketing materials that will NOT be mailed to you might include opt-in newsletters and partner offers. You may opt-out of any or all marketing communications in any commercial e-mail we send or at any time (opt-out links are provided in all marketing-related emails and any fax or mail correspondence we send you will also include opt-out instructions, but you won't receive any anyway).

The real purpose of asking you for your mail address is to remind you of actions in the game you should take, provide news and information and finally invite you to the event where the winner will be announced.

We may also display all information that you provide on the Website for other users / participants of the game, e.g. to make the score transparent and increase the tension. This information includes your displayed name, your selected national teams, duration of reading this page, any excuses etc.

Disclosure of your personal information

We may NOT share some of your personal information with third-parties engaged in providing services to us where the sharing of information is necessary to provide our services. We also may share your information in connection with a corporate transaction, such as a divestiture, merger, consolidation, or asset sale, and in the unlikely event of bankruptcy. We require all such parties to agree to privacy requirements at least as stringent as our privacy requirements, to use any such personal data solely for the purpose of providing the specified services to us, and to comply with applicable laws.

We may also NOT share personal information that is de-identified and compiled in aggregated summaries with third parties who may utilize such information for purposes, including but not limited to, data analysis and analytics purposes.

We must cooperate with legal authorities, and may in some circumstances be required to disclose personally identifiable information in response to requests from law enforcement authorities, or in response to a subpoena or other legal process. We can turn over information about you if we believe we must in order to prevent a violation of the law, and by accepting this policy, you consent to our doing so, in our sole discretion. You also consent to our disclosing information about you in the course of legal proceedings if we are legally required to do so, if we reasonably believe that doing so may mitigate our liability, or if doing so will assist us in enforcing our legal rights. Except in the specific situations described HEREIN, we will not disclose, share, rent, or sell the personal information you provide to us with any third party.

Security of your personal information

The connection to this website is encrypted and authenticated using TLS 1.2 (a strong protocol), ECDHE_RSA with X25519 (a strong key exchange), and AES_128_GCM (a strong cipher). The password is not stored directly, but instead a hash value is computed and stored using the bcrypt algorithm. We use commercially reasonable efforts to implement all generally accepted, industry-standard best practices for the protection of personal information. However, no website or platform is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee that your personal information will not be intercepted or accessed by others. While we have taken commercially reasonable precautions to protect the personal information that you provide to us, you should exercise discretion in what you provide to us, as there is always a risk that our Website or platform may be compromised via a malicious attack, a system failure, a human error, or another vulnerability, which could result in the disclosure of personal information to third parties. Any third parties that we share personal information with will be solely responsible for securing any personal information that they receive from us. All such personal information will be protected in accordance with such third parties' security practices and procedures then in-effect.

Changes to this privacy policy

We reserve the right to change this policy should we deem it advisable to do so. We will always post the latest date indicating the most current policy in effect. Any update will automatically apply so we encourage you to review. If we make material changes that will affect personal information we have already collected from you, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you of the changes and give you the opportunity to amend or cancel your registration. We take your privacy seriously; please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.
